Blue Jays On the Brink of Glory After Rookie Phenom Tames Dodgers in Game 5

Trey Yesavage delivered a performance for the ages and Davis Schneider launched a home run on the game's initial offering as the Blue Jays beat the Dodgers six to one on Wednesday, standing one win away of their first championship since 1993.

A Rookie's Record-Setting Night

The young Yesavage, who made his major league debut in September, recorded 12 strikeouts and zero walks – the first pitcher in World Series history to do so. The rookie right-hander allowed one run on three hits across seven innings. He started the season in Class A before sparse crowds, but has now started and won two of Toronto’s three victories in this best-of-seven series.

Early Offensive Explosion

Toronto’s hitters gave him breathing room almost immediately. On the initial throw, Schneider drilled a 97-mile-per-hour heater and homered to left field. Two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr followed with another blast to a similar location. It marked the historic first for the Fall Classic that the game began with two straight homers, stunning the crowd before most had found their seats.

Yesavage Takes Control

Yesavage then assumed command. He retired five straight via strikeout between the early frames, setting a rookie record before Hernández ended the run with a home run in the third inning to make it two to one. That was the nearest the Dodgers came.

Extending the Lead

In the fourth inning, Daulton Varsho smacked a triple to right field after a fielding error, and Ernie Clement lifted a sacrifice fly to bring him home for a 3–1 lead. The Dodgers' bats remained quiet from there. After scoring six runs in Monday’s 18-inning marathon, they’ve produced just four runs in their last 29 innings.

Late Inning Insurance

The starting pitcher lasted into the seventh inning but exited in the seventh after the bases were packed. Both runners he left behind came around to score – via a wild pitch and the other on a run-scoring hit – to push the lead to four runs. A single in the eighth provided the concluding score.

Relievers Seal the Deal

Yesavage exited to a standing ovation from the Blue Jays supporters, and the pen closed it out. The relief corps each pitched an inning without allowing a run to secure the victory, combining for three strikeouts while preserving the rookie’s masterpiece.

Dodgers' Lineup Shuffle Falters

The Dodgers, who rearranged their batting order in hopes of igniting the offense, again couldn't find momentum. Their top hitter went 0-for-4 and is now without a hit in his last seven appearances since a record-setting on-base performance in the third game.

On the Verge of a Championship

Now holding a 3-2 lead, Toronto return home with two opportunities to win it all. Game 6 is Friday night at Toronto's ballpark.
