British Airways to provide free fast in-flight internet by way of Starlink agreement

Flyers flying with British Airways can soon access quick connectivity onboard free of charge after a recent partnership with Elon Musk's satellite firm.

Free plus Quick Wifi Available to Everyone

The carrier revealed that the no-cost, “reliable and lightning-fast” internet provision through the satellite provider becomes offered for passengers flying economy, premium economy, or premium cabins as of next month.

Widespread Deployment Across Multiple Flight Operators

The umbrella firm of the airline, IAG, announced it had finalized an agreement involving the satellite firm to provide connectivity access on over 500 jets across its operators, which also include the Irish airline, Iberia, plus Vueling.

Smooth Wifi starting at Gate through Arrival

British Airways stated that this implementation for this technology formed part of a £7bn “upgrade” plan that will deliver lag-free connectivity access for flyers from the gate to arrival, including when traveling over large bodies of water or isolated areas.

Customers can hook up multiple gadgets and do not require a special login.

Revolutionary for the airline and passengers, improving their experience in the air on BA by offering passengers continuous internet from gate to gate.”

Current Wifi Options

Limited wifi access is currently available to British Airways passengers on most of their jets using their .air service.

Members of BA’s loyalty club may dispatch messages and plain-text correspondence in the air free of charge, whereas flyers who want to access audio, films, and content on their flight and are not travelling in first class may be charged from £4.99 and £21.99 for one internet package.

Starlink’s Infrastructure

SpaceX operates a constellation of thousands with orbiting devices which is managed under Elon Musk’s company.

Ongoing Developments for the Airline

BA's leadership are focusing to revitalize operations back after a long time with cost cutting, technology issues, industrial action, and large-scale layoffs.

British Airways explained that implementation of artificial intelligence had helped them to achieve the airline's on-time performance at record highs since over a decade ago.

Financial Performance

Earlier this year, the carrier disclosed a rise in financial performance for H1 of the year, contributing to IAG’s earnings higher.

The group will announce its financial performance covering Q3 from July to September on Friday.

Additional Satellite Partnerships

This update comes days following wireless carrier Virgin Media O2 said it was teaming up alongside SpaceX to improve cellular service in the countryside in Britain, by allowing customers to easily link mobile devices using space-based systems if there is no standard mobile signal exists.
