Mejbri Issued Four-Game Suspension and Fine

Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been given a four-match suspension and a £15,000 fine following improper behaviour in a recent match versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed Mejbri was referred a separate disciplinary panel after an incident where he spat in the direction of away fans around the 67-minute point during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.

2. Maresca Points to Tosin's Mistakes to Prove a Point

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has stated that not having seasoned players is no a problem at club, highlighting that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having a bad game in the defeat against Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the youngest team in the Premier League, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in their setback. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's oldest outfield player in the lineup, after he produced a mistake-riddled performance at the back.

“We always talk about a lack of experience after we drop points,” the coach stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, no one was mentioning experienced personnel. I understand that when we don’t win, people are always searching for the reason why, but in my view why we lost against Leeds was not down to inexperience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”

Maresca continued, “Who was the oldest one for us in the match? Who was? Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Has to Improve'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have learnt from a recent thriller at Fulham and the game is now in the past. The team held on for a 5-4 win during a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with almost 60 minutes gone.

Coming after they fought off a fightback and won 3-2 in the previous game, it raised more questions about whether they possess resilient required to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Good learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, one must learn from what happens performances and results and think of what's next.”

“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We try to understand the cause, so as not to concede so many goals. With the three goals against Leeds, and the five by Fulham you can see the two versions, correct? Therefore, always we have done many positive things. Yet how many attempts had Leeds ? Three? They scored two. That ratio is good. How many shots on target for Fulham ? Five, six? So, our ratio of shots conceded we can see too high. We have to be better.”

Newcastle Focus on Defenders' Contracts

The Magpies' recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed contract discussions with important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal extending until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

That has left Wilson to focus on talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's talks are being treated with a certain importance.

“My first three or four days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s deal was much better than the one I was expecting,” said Wilson. “But it’s well known that the club wishes to extend Tino’s contract and we would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman against the home game against Burnley on Saturday, and he expected to remain out for at least another week.
