JPMorgan Chase Demands Biometric Data for Corporate HQ Entry

The financial institution has notified personnel assigned to its recently built headquarters in New York that they have to share their physical characteristics to access the multi-billion skyscraper.

Move from Discretionary to Compulsory

The banking corporation had previously planned for the collection of employee biometrics at its recently opened tower to be voluntary.

Nevertheless, employees of the biggest American bank who have commenced employment at the corporate hub since this summer have received electronic messages stating that biometric access was now "mandatory".

How Biometric Access Works

Biometric access requires personnel to provide their hand geometry to pass through entry points in the lobby in place of scanning their ID badges.

Building Specifications and Capacity

The main office building, which apparently cost three billion dollars to construct, will eventually act as a base for thousands of staff members once it is completely filled later this year.

Protection Reasoning

JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is believed that the implementation of physical identifiers for admission is created to make the premises more secure.

Special Cases

There are exceptions for certain staff members who will retain the ability to use a traditional pass for access, although the requirements for who will employ more conventional entry methods remains unclear.

Supporting Mobile Applications

In addition to the implementation of palm and eye scanners, the company has also launched the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which serves as a digital badge and portal for worker amenities.

The application permits employees to coordinate visitor access, explore interior guides of the building and schedule food from the premises' 19 restaurant options.

Security Context

The introduction of stricter access protocols comes as US corporations, especially those with substantial activities in the city, look to enhance safety following the attack of the chief executive of one of the biggest American insurance companies in recent months.

The CEO, the head of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Additional Office Considerations

It is unclear if JP Morgan intends to deploy physical identifier entry for staff at its offices in other important economic centers, such as London.

Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends

The action comes amid controversy over the implementation of systems to track workers by their employers, including tracking physical presence metrics.

Earlier this year, all JP Morgan workers on mixed remote-office plans were directed they have to report to the office five days a week.

Management Commentary

The organization's head, Jamie Dimon, has characterized JP Morgan's recently opened 60-storey headquarters as a "tangible expression" of the institution.

The banker, one of the world's most powerful bankers, this week alerted that the probability of the US stock market experiencing a decline was far greater than many investors anticipated.
