Similar to bad weather swept through the north-west the prior day, the home side swept the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil win for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This scoreline marked back-to-back league losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to manage league and continental football with a small team has been a frequently analyzed subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the week that would truly test this ability. Regrettably for the visitors, they seemed fatigued all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Dominant First Half

Early Chances

The early indicators came soon when Miedema used her strength to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything early on, taking advantage of the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

Goals Galore

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and were unable to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have added to their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any team who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against the Gunners and United to place them in a strong standing after nine games.
