United Kingdom Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning List with An additional 11 Countries
British government has included an additional eleven new destinations to its travel alert list concerning the threats of methanol toxicity from adulterated beverages.
The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Just recently, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to multiple notable cases such as the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even minimal doses of methanol can result in blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for drinking.
While it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.
However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.
Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists
Government official the minister emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.
"While consuming alcohol abroad, opt for trusted places and refrain from local brews or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.
